Thiruvananthapuram the capital city of Kerala, has some major historical monuments and temples, the major ones are Sri Padmanabha Swami Temple, Attukal Bhagavathy temple, Kowadiar Palace, Padmanabhapuram Palace Government Museum and Sree Chithra Art Gallery and the Zoo.

Kovalam Beach, an internationally renowned tourist destination with three adjacent crescent beaches, is around 15 kms from Thiruvananthapuram. Beach lovers have plenty of leisure facilities like Ayurvedic health resorts, herbal body massages, shopping malls, massage parlours, convention centers etc.

Kuthiramalika Palace Museum

Built in the traditional Travencore style of architecture, this palace museum displays paintings and various priceless collections of the royal family and is located near the Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple.

Shanmugham Beach

This is a favorite haunt of sunset watchers. An indoor recreation club, the ‘matsya kanyaka’ made on a well maintained green lawn and a restaurant shaped like a starfish are the attractions here.

A grand collection of paintings from China, Japan, Tibet, Bali and paintings from many parts of the world are seen here.

Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple

Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple is located inside the East Fort and it is an amazing structure with a 100 feet high ‘gopuram’, built in blend of Kerala and Dravidan styles of architecture. It is known for the Mural paintings and stone carvings. The huge idol of the deity measures 18 feet in length and is covered with gold and other precious stones.

The Indo – saracenic structure boasts a“natural” air conditioning system and houses a rare collection of archaeological and historic artifacts, bronze idols, ancient ornaments, a temple chariot and ivory carvings.

Thiruvananthapuram Zoo

It is located in a well planned botanical garden. The zoo provides a chance to watch 75 different species of animals from India and abroad. A reptile house with different species of snakes is also located here.

Padmanabhapuram Palace: The seat of the erstwhile rulers of Travancore, this wooden has extraordinary murals, exquisite floral carvings and the black glossy granite floor that have withstood the test of time.

kanakannuThe Kanakakunnu Palace: Located near the Napier museum, Today the palace plays host to a lot of cultural meets and programs.

Koikkal Palace: This double storeyed traditional Nalukettu building has an inner courtyard and museums of folklore and numismatics set up by the Department of Archeology.

Vizhinjam: Vizhinjam is a fishing harbour, with a light house. Vizhinjam has some world famous beach resorts and the places around Vizhinjam are known for the Ayurvedic treatments.

Agasthyakoodam: Part of the Sahyadri range of mountains, Agasthyakoodam is noted for its abundant ayurvedic herbs, plants and brilliantly hued orchids.

Akkulam Tourist Village: A picnic spot located on the banks of Akulam Lake, which is an extension of the Veli Lake with boating facilities. A traditional style Kettuvallam is also avaliable for overnight stay.

This picnic spot,offers boating facilities. Here there is a Children’s Park dotted with huge sculptures.

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary: Spread over 53 sq. km on the Western Ghats, has rich flora and fauna, Peppara, dotted with hillocks, forests and eucalyptus plantations.

Neyyar Dam: Neyyar Dam has a watch tower, crocodile farm, lion safari park and deer park. Boating facilities are offered here.

Meenmutty and Kombaikani Waterfalls: These are two magnificent waterfalls on the upper reaches of the Neyyar reservoir. A trek of two kilometers, through dense forests, would take one to Meenmutty Falls, and a further two km, to the Kombaikani Waterfalls

Chacha Nehru Children’s Museum: Children of all age groups will enjoy the vast collection of nearly 2000 dolls, stamps and masks displayed here.
